Ol Pejeta Wildlife Conservancy

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in Laikipia County, Kenya, near the foothills of Mount Kenya. Spanning over 90,000 acres, it is one of East Africa’s most significant private conservancies and a leader in wildlife conservation and community development. Ol Pejeta is particularly known for its pioneering efforts in endangered species conservation, its innovative anti-poaching strategies, and its role as a sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo).

Rhino Conservation

Ol Pejeta is home to the largest population of black rhinos in East Africa and is a crucial stronghold for the critically endangered species. The conservancy also hosts the world’s last two remaining northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu, and is at the forefront of global efforts to save this subspecies from extinction through advanced scientific techniques, such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Ol Pejeta houses the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This sanctuary provides a safe haven for chimpanzees rescued from illegal trade and other unsafe conditions. Managed in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, it offers these primates lifelong care and rehabilitation.

Wildlife Diversity

The conservancy boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, including the Big Five and over 200 other mammal species. Visitors can encounter animals such as Grevy’s zebras, African wild dogs, giraffes, cheetahs, and hippos. Additionally, it is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 300 recorded bird species.

Conservation and Community Development

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is committed to community development and sustainable practices. It supports local communities through education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure projects funded by conservation tourism and donor partnerships. It also engages in sustainable land-use practices that benefit both wildlife and the local pastoralist communities.
